Why choose a modern stove?
A modern way to heat. A timeless way to live.
A modern wood-burning or multi-fuel stove is more than a beautiful feature in the home. With today’s Ecodesign appliances, improved combustion technology and cleaner fuels, solid-fuel heating has evolved considerably.
Unlike an open fire, a modern closed stove gives you much greater control over the combustion process, allowing more of the fuel’s energy to be converted into useful heat rather than disappearing straight up the chimney.
Modern Ecodesign appliances are designed to deliver high levels of efficiency with significantly reduced emissions compared with traditional open fires and older stoves. Government guidance specifically recommends considering an Ecodesign stove, noting that these appliances are more efficient and produce lower emissions than open fires.
And there’s something wonderfully simple about the fuel itself. Wood is a renewable fuel when sourced responsibly, while manufactured solid fuels provide another option for suitable multi-fuel appliances. Choosing properly dried, Woodsure Ready to Burn wood, with moisture content of 20% or less, helps the appliance burn more efficiently and with less smoke.
A modern way to heat. A timeless way to live.
A stove brings together things that modern heating doesn’t always provide: real flame, radiant heat, independence of fuel choice and the atmosphere of a genuine fire.
Whether you’re restoring a period fireplace, adding a focal point to a contemporary home or simply looking for an additional source of heat, today’s solid-fuel appliances combine traditional fire with modern combustion technology.
The fire may be timeless. The technology isn’t.
🔥 Efficient heat
A closed Ecodesign stove is designed to extract considerably more useful heat from the fuel than an open fire. Current Ecodesign requirements set a minimum seasonal efficiency of 65% for closed-fronted solid-fuel room heaters using conventional solid fuels, compared with 30% for open-fronted appliances.
🌿 Cleaner combustion
Modern combustion systems are designed to burn fuel more completely. DEFRA guidance states that Ecodesign stoves produce lower emissions and are more efficient than non-Ecodesign stoves and open fires.
🪵 Choose your fuel
Depending on the appliance, you can burn properly dried wood or approved manufactured solid fuels. Ready to Burn wood is certified at 20% moisture content or less, helping it burn more efficiently than wet wood.
🏡 Heat where you live
A stove provides direct heat into the room rather than relying entirely on a central heating system to distribute heat around the property.
🔥 The atmosphere of a real fire
There’s also the bit that doesn’t fit neatly into an efficiency table. Watching a real fire burn, feeling radiant heat and having a beautiful focal point in the room is part of why people choose a stove in the first place.
